The fishing opportunities in Helsinki may not be the first thing that comes to mind when the city is known for its other attractions. However, for those who are visiting Helsinki and seeking a unique and peaceful fishing experience, Helsinki's waterways offer intriguing possibilities, especially for fly fishing enthusiasts.

Helsinki and Its Fishing Spots

Helsinki is renowned for its numerous water bodies, providing excellent fishing opportunities. Coastal paths, rivers, and lakes offer diverse environments and fish species that attract both locals and tourists alike. For example, the archipelago off the coast of Helsinki provides stunning landscapes and versatile fishing spots where unforgettable fishing adventures can be experienced.

Fly Fishing in the Helsinki-Vantaa Area

Although many may perceive Helsinki as a bustling city, it also offers tranquil fishing spots, especially in the Helsinki-Vantaa area. Here, you can enjoy fly fishing in beautiful surroundings while escaping the hustle and bustle of the city.

The main course of the Vantaa River in Southern Finland is approximately a hundred kilometers long, with several hundred kilometers of tributaries and smaller streams. Vantaa River is a popular fishing destination where you can catch trout, pike, perch, and roach. In recent decades, the Vantaa River has emerged as one of the most significant sea trout rivers in the Gulf of Finland region, with the recovery attributed to trout stocking efforts and extensive successful restoration of spawning areas.

Best Times for Fly Fishing in Helsinki

While fly fishing can be pursued year-round, the best times in Helsinki are typically from spring to autumn. During spring and early summer, many fish species become active and are eager to feed, making fishing particularly rewarding. Fly fishing for sea trout in the Vantaa River, in particular, peaks during early summer and early autumn when sea trout return to their spawning grounds. The fishing season at Vantaa river ends at the end of August.
